What You Can Do to Help Prevent Lockouts

There are very few people in this world who can say they have never been locked out of their car, home or place of business. Those who have experienced this unpleasant type incident know just how frustrating and time-consuming getting a lockout resolved can be. It certainly is not a situation that anyone ever wants to find themselves in. This is especially true in times of extreme weather such as storms, snow, and sweltering heat. So, without a doubt, it’s best to always try to avoid any type of lockout scenario. Here are some helpful tips that many people use to help them avoid ever being locked out of their home, car or business ever again.

Here are some tried and true methods that just might keep you from finding yourself in a lockout situation:

Establish a Routine with Keys

Many people like to make grabbing their car and house keys a part of their daily routine. To do this they will get in the habit of picking up their keys the at the same time they do such routine daily tasks as packing the lunch they made, putting their wallet in their pocket and correlating it with other tasks they do in the morning on a routine basis. People have a hard time breaking habits that they get into. This is true of good ones too. So, the sooner you start a daily routine with your important keys the sooner you will reduce your chances of being in a lockout situation.

Put Your Keys on a Hook Near Your Entryway Door

Here us a lockout prevention tip that many have had success with. They put their keys in a place where those keys almost hit them in the face every time, they go out their door. The best way to do this is to screw a hook into the door. Position it about a foot above the door handle. This way your keys are in a position that is relatively easy to spot every single time you go to leave your home. 

Carry Spare Keys on You

One word of extreme caution here; when I say ‘carry spare keys on you, that’s exactly what I mean. What that does not mean is hiding keys in flower pots, under rugs, and elsewhere outside your home. I am not talking about hiding spare keys in any way shape or form. That is just asking for trouble. When I say keep a spare key on your person, I am talking about keeping it in your purse or wallet. Do this with a spare home key and a spare car key. So, the next time you lose your keys or lock them inside a car, you simply get out your spare key and quickly resolve your lockout situation.

Don’t Put Off Repairs to Locks

Many lockout situations are not the fault of the person that has to suffer through them. Locks are mechanical devices and just like all mechanical devices they fail sometimes. That’s why it’s very important to look for warning signs that a lock is about to have a problem. Keys that turn hard in locks, locks that grind when a key is turned in them, and even locks where the key gets hard to pull out are all signs of possible lock problems. So be proactive if you experience any of these lock warning signs and have them taken care of before you find yourself in a lockout situation.
